Making Prom Possible

Prom season is approaching faster than you think and with it comes the heavy bill of everything a girl needs. Luckily, one woman is bringing people together to help spread the wealth. In Meriden, used prom dresses are being offered to those who are unable to afford their own, but want to enjoy all the wonders of going to prom.

The organization “Prom Angels” is aiming to collect as many dresses, accessories, shoes and jewelry as possible for those who need it. The mastermind behind this project, Kasperzyk said the idea came to her while cleaning out her closet. She had multiple dresses that she thought of selling, until she realized she could give them away to girls who would benefit from it. Kasperzyk set up a Facebook page filled with all the details on how to donate any unwanted dresses. She has been working with guidance counselors from different high schools throughout her town to figure out who might be deserving of some free formal wear. The goal is to help as many girls as possible before prom comes in March. Kasperzyk is no stranger to serving her community she has already helped several organizations such as relay for life and has high hopes for Prom Angels.

Here in Burlington, a similar opportunity is being offered. Students are able to shop for prom at an affordable price. Monday, January 26 in the Har-Bur cafeteria people can shop from hundred of dresses and even tuxedo rentals. There will also be 5% off all sales that will go to Project Grad for this year.

“I think it’s a really great idea and a great way to help others.” Said senior, Rachel Lord. Lord has attended prom before and knows the struggle of how costly it can be. “I had to save up for months to be able to afford the dress I wanted, so it’s great that girls who don’t have the money still have an opportunity to look their best at prom.” The idea of recycling prom dresses is not only a great way to give back to those in need but it’s a good way to make use of something that will probably never be used again. Many people only wear their prom dresses once in their lifetime, and buy a new one every year, so why not but the old ones to use.
