Why Gun Control Advocates Live in a Fantasy World

Anthony Licata

It seems like the gun control debate never dies. It remains a heated partisan issue that revives every time an attack on the homeland occurs. There should really be no debate, the Constitution protects gun owners with the 2nd Amendment, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Despite the clear cut constitutional right for law abiding citizens to be able to defend themselves, the left continues to attack time after time with proposed bans on high capacity magazines, assault weapons, and whatever nonsensical measure they would like to see put in place to satisfy lobbyists and Democratic voters. As if the NRA and anyone smart enough to have a self defense method when law enforcement is nowhere to be found are both evil. Makes so much sense, right? Let’s cut to the chase.

The attack in San Bernardino has just catalyzed yet another ridiculous gun control debate. The two perpetrators were radical Islamic extremists, united by a visa granted to the wife as she immigrated here from Saudi Arabia. Tashfeen Malik went through strict background checks and more vetting than a refugee from Syria would before entering the United States. You see how well that worked out for us. Anyways, California has the most stringent gun laws in the country, which failed miserably to prevent the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. California has already adopted President Obama’s layout for strict gun laws that he speaks of every time there is a shooting. Again, you see how well that worked out for us. These sociopaths will find a way to harm people no matter how many gun laws you put in place. All you’re doing is taking away the rights of law abiding citizens to either hunt or defend themselves in a time of attack. If somebody in that room had a gun when Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik perpetrated, we might have a very different outcome. Instead of hiding under tables and in closets, somebody could’ve put down these two savages. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, always remember that. Gun free zones such as public buildings where this shooting took place as well as the community college in Oregon are the softest of targets. If the two unarmed security guards at that college were armed, or even the veterans going to class that day were allowed to carry on campus, the attacker would most likely have been shot down. Jihadists aren’t stupid, they will go wherever they know that no one can fight back. You never see any of these tragedies happening in Texas do you? If these two demons in San Bernardino tried pulling this stunt in Texas or anywhere along the Bible Belt, they would’ve gotten their ugly heads blown off. Minimal damage would be done, if any at all.

Strict gun laws obviously don’t work, exemplified by Chicago. Although Chicago hasn’t experienced such a terrorist attack influenced by radical Islam, this city is essentially a modern day holocaust. This poor city has been absolutely plagued by the infiltration of drugs, weapons, and total warfare between different gangs. Chicago is run by liberals; most notably Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff for… you guessed it, President Obama. Obama’s good buddy has absolutely no grip on the barbaric actions taking place within his inner city. He’s actually being called to resign along with his 18 percent approval rating as I’m writing this. However, instead of dealing with the problem upfront, he does what so many others in his party do; sit back and implement bogus gun laws to make it seem like they are keeping you safe. Despite the most rigorous gun laws in the country, President Obama’s hometown of Chicago is up in flames, as this September was the city’s deadliest month since 2002. More people were killed in Chicago during September of 2015 than Americans killed in Afghanistan! Overall, murders in Chicago are up 21 percent from last year, and there have been more than 3,000 of them in the President’s hometown since he took office. Someone is shot every 2.8 hours in Chicago, 2.8 HOURS. You can implement as many gun laws as you want, but guess what…  Bad guys don’t follow the law. Hello!? You want to stop gun violence in the city? You do it with more aggressive law enforcement and stricter, mandatory sentencing. Mayor Rudy Giuliani drove down gun violence in New York City from thousands of shootings per year to only hundreds, and drove out the many gangs and bad guys that once haunted the city. His intellectual use of ambitious law enforcement is a tactic that the Chicago mayor could use. Instead, his police department is an absolute disaster. But sure, banning guns will do the trick. Even New York City saw a 20 percent increase in homicides since the January 2013 SAFE Act has been enacted by Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), which included an “assault weapons” ban, a gun registration scheme, a “high capacity” magazine ban, and expanded background checks. Once again, you see how well that’s working out. It’s just flat out comical when you hear pro-gun control advocates saying that such restrictions keep us safer. You can put in all the laws you want and you will find them ineffective, as represented by California’s incident.

Going back to California, no sane person could argue that any sort of gun law or restriction could’ve stopped the chaos that occurred that day. With a President who refuses to face the terrorist threat at hand, now is not the time to fumble around with the 2nd Amendment. As ISIS becomes a more dominant force with our incompetent President, we could all very well be in grave danger, and our first line of defense, God forbid something happens, will be a gun. There are over 900 ongoing investigations of people living here in the states that are affiliated with ISIS. Over 70 ISIS affiliates in the last year have been arrested according to the FBI and DHS, that’s more than one per week. They are already here, so let’s wake up and wise up. As for the silly argument that President Obama put forward in saying that people on the no-fly list are able to buy a gun and that threatens us all: gobbledygook. The no-fly list has attracted the most public criticism and legal challenges out of all the government watch lists, because of its lack of transparency about how and why people are included. Most individuals in the databases have never been charged with a crime and are only suspected of being involved with terrorism. A federal court this year declared the government’s system for dealing with appeals and challenges to inclusion on the no-fly list as unconstitutional. Most people on this list were never given an explanation why, but were denied the ability to board flights. There are such high error rates and false positives in this database. Everyday Americans that have absolutely nothing to do with terrorism wind up on the no-fly list. There’s no way to get your name removed from it in a timely fashion, either. There’s also no due process. If we are going to win this fight against terrorism and the bad guys, the Left better stop playing games with American lives and do the right thing. The right to defend yourself is one of America’s most unique liberties that you can’t find anywhere else, and that’s what makes our country so great. Anyone who thinks otherwise is nothing less than an airhead.

Go ahead, keep passing more gun laws. See what happens.
