Getting to Know Your Student Council

From August to June, day and night, the Mills Student Council works behind the scenes to organize school-wide events for the school community. Students often overlook the time and energy that the Student Council members put into planning all of the school’s functions. However, no one is more underrated than the four officers leading the group: President Kristin Sullivan, Vice President Paige Reid, Secretary Alexandra Zajko, and Treasurer Brenna Jacques.

Senior Kristin Sullivan has been an active member of Student Council for four years and now leads the club as president.

“I wanted to promote school spirit and help organize all the different events that Student Council runs,” says Sullivan when asked about her motives for being a member. “I also liked how, as a member, I get to work with other students, teachers, and the administration.”

One might think that it would be difficult to balance time being in so many different clubs and running student council, but Sullivan has another way of looking at it.

“Actually I find it easier to be busy because if I’m not, I procrastinate more. Being busy doesn’t bother me,” Kristin said.

Promoting school spirit has always been a goal of Student Council. With two more spirit weeks planned and a dance, the spirit is sure to remain strong.

“I think that the school spirit has gotten a lot better over the years. Last year the Thunder Dome was filled with people and this year the Danger Zone was always packed. Also the participation in spirit week [in October 2014] and the pep rally was the best it’s been in four years,” said Sullivan.

Another important member of the Student Council is senior Paige Reid, who joined the club in her freshman year.

“I joined because I like to get involved in school and thought that being a part of this group, I would be able to help plan out the things we do at school like dances and spirit week and pep rallies,” says Reid.

Making a difference in the school has always been one of Paige’s top priorities.

“I really just wanted to be able to make a difference and made sure I had the ability to make high school fun for everyone,” Paige said.

Senior treasurer Brenna Jacques joined Student Council in her sophomore year after hearing that some of her role models on the soccer team were a part of the group.

“I joined because, after my freshman year, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough,” says Brenna Jacques. “My role this year is to make sure that we have enough funds to have events for the student body. And also during events I collect money and count it.”

Many underclassmen might be skeptical about joining Student Council because many members are juniors and seniors. However, Jacques says that shouldn’t stop anyone from joining.

“I would say it’s never too late to join! There’s always chances to get involved, you just have to ask an officer,” says Jacques. “We’re always looking for dedicated members!”

The final member of Student Council is senior and secretary, Alexandra Zajko. She has been a member of Student Council along with many other clubs since her freshman year.

“I joined because I like to be a part of the decision making process. I felt and still feel like it’s a big deal to be a part of what the student body finds most fun at Mills,” says Zajko. “I fell in love with it because everyone really takes it the extra mile to make sure events go as planned and we all work as a team.”

Student Council is always looking for more members to bring new thoughts to the club and make a difference. So don’t be afraid to jump right in and join Student Council.
